Kids
School is hard. Having to be subordinate to all authoritative figures is hard. Parents getting a divorce is hard. A loved one passing away is hard. Being confused about one’s own changing body is hard. Life is just HARD!
So, let’s talk about the hard stuff.
Mental health awareness has been talked about for several years and social media is always trending warnings and messages about mental health. Students are becoming more and more aware of their feelings and are now able to attach labels to them. Feelings of anxiety (becoming overwhelmed) and depression (extreme sadness) are used by students as young as 6 years old. Being aware of our feelings, but not knowing the cause or reasoning behind them, is hard, even for adults!
There are a multitude of reasons that children, adolescents, teens and/or college students would benefit from counseling.
Students come to therapy, not only because a school counselor or teacher has recommended it, but also because they are going through, or have gone through, a number of life changes. Students are more readily being diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Social anxiety is still prevalent, bullying – especially online bullying has become astronomically high. These are just a few reasons why student counseling is important. Here are just a few more:
- Adjust to learning disabilities
-
Dealing with grief or loss (divorce or death)
- Questioning one’s gender or identity
- Overwhelmed by schoolwork, grades, college admissions, etc.
- Confused about one’s sexual orientation
- Pressure of being “perfect”
- Anger Management
- Dealing with abuse/trauma
